Wool makes fantastic nesting material for birds. They collect this fibre in the wild wherever sheep graze. As well as being a cosy liner, it is practical as it doesn’t retain water in the nest and it will fully biodegrade in time.
The best place to hang your woolly bird box is close by, or on, feeding stations. Birds are attracted to feeding stations by the sound of other birds and so more gather. You can also dispense the wool into a fat pecker or any other empty feeder.
For hedgehogs, place a little in the house and some more nearby. Hedgehogs, similarly to birds, like to make their own nest so will find the stash of lovely wool and drag it into the house.
