The temperature has dropped, the nights are still dark, but the presence of snowdrops shooting in the garden at twool HQ signal the early signs of Spring emerging and more sustainable gardening to be done! That means: light the fire, grab a glass of something and curl up with the latest Organic Gardening Catalogue.
In the garden it’s time to plan, take stock, clean out the greenhouse, prune any fruit trees, tidy up (but leave some leaves where the good guys of the garden can sleep til Spring or munch on the bad guys – I’m talking to you, Weevils and Slugs!) Keep feeding the birds – this has the double effect of supporting your own eco-system and environment as well as natural pest control. Nothing beats hungry blue tits when you’ve got marauding aphids. That bug hotel and bird box you got for Christmas? Now’s the time to install it. You’ll be glad you did once you’ve got visiting pollinators and nesting families.
